8th Grade Field Trip Picture

On January 11th, eighth grade Hahira Middle School students traveled to Atlanta for the awesome opportunity to participate in the iFLY skydiving experience. Not only did the students experience the actual simulation of skydiving, they also participated in STEM related lessons and activities. Students were given a physics demonstration in a wind tunnel by an iFLY educator, and they investigated the effects of parachute parameters on flight performance by working in groups to build parachutes of their own. Students and iFLY educators discussed differences in solids and liquids, exertion of forces, differences in frontal and surface areas of objects, and how speed and velocities are recorded in the tunnel. The curriculum at iFLY was designed by STEM educators and scientists to support STEM learning in the classrooms specifically detailing standards in science and math. “Students were able to make the connections between science and math in a way that we cannot always demonstrate in the classroom, plus they were having fun while learning,” said Christi Clements, HMS teacher.  “It was wonderful seeing so many smiles and hearing students tell me how much they loved the experience.”

Community Partner becomes a dream maker picture

This year Hahira Middle School has embraced the theme Dream Big.  Students have been encouraged to make a list of dreams that could possibly come true.  As students have been working hard to meet academic and behavior goals, faculty and staff members have been working to make dreams come true for students.  Chick-Fil-A, an HMS Community Partner in Education, joined the efforts to make one student’s dream come true.

Clark Rodgers, a 6th grade student, had a dream of being able to provide Chick-Fil-A for his entire team.  Kenneth White and April Bruhl, managers of the North Valdosta Chick-Fil-A granted this dream and more!  Kenneth and April, and of course the Chick-Fil-A Cow arrived at the school with food and that characteristic willingness to serve others.  To Clark’s surprise, Chick-Fil-A not only provided meals for all of the students on his team, but this community business also provided Clark with Chick-Fil-A for a year!  This is yet another example of how local businesses such as Chick-Fil-A invest in our schools and our students.  We are so grateful for our Community Partners in Education!
